Raymond, Wayte. HANDWRITTEN LETTER, SIGNED, TO JOHN J. PITTMAN DATED SEPT. 27, 1949. Written in blue ink on Wayte Raymond, Inc. letterhead. Folded for mailing; near fine. [with] Raymond, Wayte. HANDWRITTEN LETTER, SIGNED, TO JOHN J. PITTMAN DATED OCT. 25. Written in blue ink on Raymond’s personal letterhead. Folded for mailing; fine. Two fully handwritten letters from Wayte Raymond to John J. Pittman on the subject of early United States proof coins. The first reads, “I am considering the publication of a pamphlet on U.S. proof coins and am wondering if you would co-operate by sending me a list of the proofs you have or know of before 1855 all metals. If this matter is on interest to you let me know and I will write further.” The second letter (presumed from context to be later, though no year is indicated) is more detailed, beginning, “My idea re. proof sets is that they were not struck as sets before 1840.” Raymond goes on to discuss specific dates and issues, noting that “the sets you have of 43, 44, 46 are of extreme rarity and undoubtedly from Brand coll.” Quite interesting.
