Dumont, Cathy [photographer]. C. DOUGLAS SMITH COLLECTION OF UNITED STATES LARGE CENTS: 1797, 1798, 1802, 1803, 1805, 1806 & 1807. Five hundred twelve black and white photographs, each approximately 1.5 by 1.75 inches, taken c. 1992. Housed in 256 vinyl flip envelopes. About these photographs, Jack Collins in 1996 wrote: “Mr. Smith is one of the last remaining collecting giants of United States Large Cents. His contemporaries included such luminaries as Homer K. Downing, Dorothy Paschal and Dr. William Sheldon. In the field of Sheldon varieties, his expertise was in constant demand from such auction firms as Lester Merkin and Stack’s, for whom he frequently catalogued Large Cents. There are 256 different Sheldon varieties and sub-varieties photographed here. This represents the complete collection of C. Douglas Smith [with the exception of only three coins that were inadvertently not photographed]. [Online description truncated: see printed or PDF catalogue for full description.]
